Course overview
The equine temporomandibular joint (TMJ) plays an important role in comfort, posture, movement and performance. Closely linked to the poll, hyoid apparatus and cervical region, dysfunction within the TMJ can contribute to muscular tension, altered biomechanics, behavioural changes and ridden performance issues. This course explores the anatomy, biomechanics and function of the TMJ, along with common signs of dysfunction and when veterinary referral may be appropriate.

Through a combination of theory and practical sessions, you will develop the skills to assess the TMJ and surrounding soft tissues using observation and palpation, before applying safe, effective massage techniques within your professional scope of practice. The course also highlights the importance of a multidisciplinary approach, recognising how massage therapists can work alongside veterinary surgeons, equine dental technicians and other equine professionals to support horse welfare and performance.
