What first sparked your interest in equine massage therapy? Was there a moment or a particular horse that influenced you?

I’ve always been really interested in horse comfort and how much it affects everything — from performance to behaviour. I had a mare who sadly had quite a serious injury, and that really pushed my interest further, especially around not just ridden work but also rehab and keeping horses comfortable long term.

What part of your training or business stretched you the most, and how did you grow from it?
Definitely learning to trust myself. At the start it’s so easy to second guess what you’re feeling. But now I’ve been doing this a few years, I’ve seen some really nice changes in horses — sometimes even after just one session. Especially the more stoic types who are actually quite sore underneath it all. Going back and feeling that improvement on a repeat visit has really helped me trust my own ability a lot more.

What muscle, region, or type of case do you secretly enjoy working on most, and why?
I love working over the back. I find it’s where a lot of tension sits, and it can have such a big impact on the whole horse when you start to release it.
When you place your hands on a horse for the first time, what are you really paying attention to?
The horse’s reaction first — that tells you so much straight away. Then I’m feeling what’s actually under my hands… tension, tightness, any muscle loss, and starting to piece together how they’re using their body.

Outside of therapy, what keeps you balanced?
I’ve got a 4-month-old baby so life is definitely busy at the moment! I like to keep active when I can — seeing friends, getting outside, and I love things like ice skating and paddleboarding. I’m not currently a horse owner but I share a horse so still get my riding fix, and I’ve also got three cats at home.

What has surprised you most since qualifying?
How much owners value understanding what’s going on with their horse, not just the treatment itself. People really want to learn how to help their horses in between sessions.

How have you grown your therapy business?
Mainly through repeat clients and word of mouth, and keeping things quite simple. I focus on hands-on treatment, then back that up with tailored aftercare and stretches. I also give owners access to my stretch library so they can check they’re doing everything correctly between visits, which people really like.

If a future therapist is reading this and doubting themselves, what would you say to them?

Keep going — honestly everyone doubts themselves at the start. You don’t need to know everything straight away. Every horse teaches you something, and your confidence will build over time.
